A drowsy kitten upon a rug beheld a moving object and attempted to catch it, but the object eluded its teeth and claws. Presently all that could be seen was an angry, whirling mass, until the offending object was seized; and then with a cry of self-inflicted pain, the kitten found it was only its own tail which had disconcerted it. This homely illustration well portrays the self-deception of mortal mind about itself. When the writer first read in Science and Health (p. 177): "Mortal mind and body are one. Neither exists without the other, and both must be destroyed by immortal Mind," she thought the statement so radical that for long afterwards she always turned that leaf over quickly and read on the next page, until she attained in some degree the understanding which sets one free from the mesmerism of mortal mind and body. Mortal mind is the counterfeit of divine Mind, matter the unreal opposite of Spirit as substance. These tares and wheat grow side by side until the full effulgence of the infinite light destroys the supposititious opposite. The understanding of the Christ presence and power applied to so-called mortal mind must drive out the false belief which mortal mind calls matter, even as light introduced into a dark room dispels darkness, which can nowhere be found, however much searched for.
When a student commences his studies in mathematics he may be discouraged by the extent of what is, to him, the unknown, but as his understanding unfolds, he is less conscious of the unknown, or his ignorance. Although often tempted to delay in order to ascertain the why and wherefore of two and two not being five, he realizes that only by dealing with that which is sustained and governed by its laws can knowledge unfold, for this alone can dispel ignorance. When his studies are completed, it will be difficult for him to say what has become of the not known. He will know that ignorance is not transmuted into wisdom; but with the unfolding of wisdom, ignorance disappears as darkness before light. It is clear to Christian Scientists that evil never develops into good; nor does matter merge into Spirit. This Jesus showed by the parable of the tares and wheat.
A point often overlooked is that man is the likeness and image, or manifestation, of God as the source of all action, as well as all being. Jesus unmistakably realized the omniaction of divine Mind, and of man as reflecting that action. His words when replying to those who denounced him for healing on the Sabbath day indicated that his knowledge of the infinite Mind and the infinite idea was beyond their understanding. He knew that the command, "Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth," simply means that man's necessity is to express the allness of God, and that man could not remain in supine idleness, inaction, but must reflect omniscience, omnipresence, omnipotence, omniaction. He therefore said, "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work." Jesus ever pointed to God as the source, or basis, of his activity, and said respecting each faithful follower, "Greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father."
Our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, has given us this inspiring statement on page 258 of Science and Health: "God expresses in man the infinite idea forever developing itself, broadening and rising higher and higher from a boundless basis." Who can gauge the infinite possibilities of man when this statement is understood and demonstrated? Man must know himself for what he is, as the manifestation of infinite Mind, inseparable from that Mind as a ray is from the sun; and from this boundless source he must unfold to the full Christ stature.
How necessary it is, then, that we insistently declare the true Word, the Word of God, if we would hasten our progress! Accompanying this spiritual unfoldment, ignorance, the not known, or mortal mind, will change and disappear; and with its disappearance will vanish so-called matter. That only can perish or suffer which is not created by God; and the knowledge that God created all that really is, and that, therefore, the so-called mortal mind is unreal, inspires the Christian Scientist in his efforts to heal the sick and sinful. Jesus showed that evil has no principle, hence is unreal, having no true existence, when he spoke to mortal mind thus: "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it."
He who desires to attain the Christ stature does not halt to investigate negation except with the understanding of positive good. From a true basis he understandingly declares the Word, before which negation fades to extinction and thus is enabled to say in the words of the Master "I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do."
