The Ever-operative Law of God

The law of God is as operative in the world today as it was centuries ago, and it is being demonstrated by Christian Scientists in healing, protection, and regeneration. The miracles which the Bible records are understood in Christian Science to be natural, not supernatural, and to evidence the constant operation of divine law. Those who are gaining an understanding of Christian Science are gaining an understanding of God's law and its operation. They no longer look upon the healings they experience and witness as miracles, but as the natural outcome of the operation of true law. Therefore in their daily experience they are feeling its influence.

The original meaning of the word law, according to a dictionary, is "something set, placed, fixed, laid down." Law, then, in the light of Christian Science, is a divine thought-force, and man, the divine image of Mind, is in perfect relation to and in harmony with this law. Mary Baker Eddy defines God's law and the so-called laws of matter in no unmistakable terms when she says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p.257): "Law is either a moral or an immoral force. The law of God is the law of Spirit, a moral and spiritual force of immortal and divine Mind. The so-called law of matter is an immoral force of erring mortal mind, alias the minds of mortals."

The law of God is the force of good. Instead of presenting this law as a condemning and destructive force, Jesus, who clearly understood the law of God, presented it as a healing and saving force; and those who follow him must do so also. All the rules of Christian Science are based on the divine law which Jesus utilized the law of perfect cause and perfect effect, perfect Mind and perfect idea, spiritual substance and spiritual manifestation. The effect has to be in absolute accord, in absolute harmony, with the cause. Whatever appears in cause appears in effect also. Divine law sustains this accord. Divine Mind, acting through its thought-force, produces all ideas, or effects. It produces every true manifestation. God and His creation constitute all real cause and effect. This is all that truly exists.

Our Leader discovered the Science of divine law and has shared her discovery with us. This Science teaches that since God, Spirit, is All, there is no matter; and the demonstrations of Christian Science prove the nothingness of matter and its evil claim to law. On page 96 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy tells us: "This material world is even now becoming the arena for conflicting forces. On one side there will be discord and dismay; on the other side there will be Science and peace. The breaking up of material beliefs may seem to be famine and pestilence, want and woe, sin, sickness, and death, which assume new phases until their nothingness appears. These disturbances will continue until the end of error, when all discord will be swallowed up in spiritual Truth."

The newspapers, radio, television, are all blazing forth reports of false law. But the moral and spiritual force of immortal Mind is destroying the so-called forces of mortal mind. Christian Scientists are comforted in knowing that the end of all so-called material force, or material law, "draweth nigh," and that the reign of peace as prophesied in the Bible is appearing through the operation of divine law.

Christian Science demands that we rise above the belief of life, substance, or intelligence in matter that is, above any belief in a cause apart from God, divine Mind. This Science also demands that we give up all belief in material law in order to understand and demonstrate the divine law and to witness its glorious effects in the healing of the sick and sinful and the preserving of mankind.

Moses, from the time he received the revelation of law on Mount Sinai, was continuously presenting to the Israelites what he understood and demonstrated of divine law as a preserving force. The writer, as a child, was taught to love this law. She was told that obedience to it was required for happiness, well-being, and protection. The story of how Moses received his understanding of law and of how he presented it to the Israelites in the Ten Commandments was often told to her, and she grew to womanhood with a love for Moses and a great love for law as the animating force of her existence. Along with this early training she was taught verse 10 of the forty-first chapter of Isaiah: "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness." These words gave her confidence in the ever-presence of God and His law.

While in a distant city it seemed necessary for the writer to fly home on a certain afternoon, and she made all the arrangements. As she boarded the airplane the word "annihilation" came so forcefully to her thought that as soon as she had strapped herself in her seat she began doing prayerful metaphysical work, as she had been taught in Christian Science. She thanked God that His law was operating everywhere to bless and save. As the plane left the ground the word "obliteration" came to thought forcefully, and again she was grateful for this forewarning, well knowing that forewarning, properly heeded in Christian Science, leads to forearming against the subtle suggestions of mortal mind, falsely called law.

While the writer was working earnestly to know that all were actually in the presence of God, the stewardess told the passengers to buckle the seat belts tightly, explaining that they were going into a storm that had not been anticipated and could not be avoided. Almost immediately the plane was in the black cloud of a tornado. In an effort to get out of this cloud the plane dipped into the funnel and was hurled about and carried in the course of the whirling wind. The passengers were terrified, and the cloud was so black that it seemed as if it were midnight, though it was actually daytime. The writer thought quickly of how Moses had invoked the law of God at the Red Sea so that the Israelites could go through on dry land. She declared that the law of God operating in Moses' time was operating that minute for all on the plane, and that all would go through safely. Almost instantly the black clouds parted as though a mighty hand had rolled them back, and the plane and its passengers went through safely.

Arriving home late that night, she was met by her husband and two friends. Their first remark to her was, "You must have had a wonderful trip, because your face is shining so." Inwardly there was an unspeakable sense of the glory of God's law ever operating to save and bless His children. Through the years that have passed since this experience the writer has been able to prove many times the ever-availability and operation of this law. Her gratitude for Christian Science is unbounded.

Christian Scientists today can and must prove the law of God, the force of good, to be the only law, equal to every need, bringing harmony and peace to earth, annihilating all the claims of evil. Mrs. Eddy tells us in her wonderful article "Spirit and Law" in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p.259): "When the Lawgiver was the only law of creation, freedom reigned, and was the heritage of man; but this freedom was the moral power of good, not of evil: it was divine Science, in which God is supreme, and the only law of being. In this eternal harmony of Science, man is not fallen: he is governed in the same rhythm that the Scripture describes, when 'the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy."'
